Solid Wood vs. MDF Furniture — What's the Difference?
When shopping for furniture, you've probably come across terms like "solid wood," "MDF," and "particle board." But what do they actually mean — and why does it matter? At Ideas to Home, we believe an informed buyer is a happy buyer, so let's break it down.
What Is Solid Wood?
Solid wood furniture is made from natural timber — oak, alder, pine, cherry, maple, and more. Each piece is cut directly from a tree, giving it unique grain patterns, natural character, and exceptional durability. Solid wood can be sanded, refinished, and repaired, meaning a well-cared-for piece can last generations.
What Is MDF?
MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down wood fibers and combining them with resin and wax under high heat and pressure. The result is a smooth, uniform panel that's easy to paint — but it's heavy, not moisture-resistant, and cannot be refinished once damaged.
What Is Particle Board?
Particle board is similar to MDF but made from coarser wood chips and sawdust. It's the least durable of the three and is commonly found in flat-pack, budget furniture. It doesn't hold screws well over time and is highly susceptible to moisture damage.
Side-by-Side Comparison
- Durability: Solid wood wins — it can last decades or even centuries with proper care.
- Repairability: Solid wood can be sanded and refinished. MDF and particle board cannot.
- Moisture resistance: Solid wood handles humidity better and can be treated. MDF swells when wet.
- Weight: MDF is surprisingly heavy. Solid wood varies by species but is generally more manageable.
- Appearance: Solid wood has natural beauty and unique grain. MDF has a uniform, painted look.
- Cost: Solid wood costs more upfront — but lasts far longer, making it the better long-term investment.
Why We Only Use Solid Wood
At Ideas to Home, every piece of furniture we craft is made from premium solid wood — oak, alder, pine, cherry, and maple. We don't use MDF or particle board because we believe furniture should be built to last, not replaced every few years. Our pieces are handcrafted in the USA and built to become heirlooms.
