How to Choose the Right Finish for Your Wood Furniture

RSS

The finish on your furniture is more than just a color choice — it's the protective layer that determines how your piece looks, feels, and holds up over years of daily use. With so many finish types on the market, it can be overwhelming to know what you're actually getting. Here's what you need to know, and why the finish we use at Ideas to Home sets our furniture apart.

Common Types of Furniture Finishes

Oil-Based Stains and Varnishes

Traditional oil-based finishes penetrate deep into the wood and offer rich color. However, they take longer to dry, emit high levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) during application, and can yellow over time. They're also harder to clean up and less environmentally friendly.

Wax Finishes

Wax gives wood a soft, natural look and feel, but it offers minimal protection against moisture and daily wear. It requires frequent reapplication and isn't ideal for high-use furniture like tables or TV stands.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is durable and water-resistant, but oil-based versions emit strong fumes and can give furniture a plastic-like sheen. Water-based polyurethane is better but still varies widely in quality.

Water-Based Lacquer (Our Choice)

High-quality water-based lacquer is the gold standard for fine furniture finishing. It dries quickly, emits far fewer VOCs than oil-based alternatives, resists yellowing, and produces a beautiful, consistent finish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood without masking it.

Why We Use Low-VOC, Water-Based Furniture Lacquer

At Ideas to Home, we finish every piece with a premium low-VOC, water-based furniture lacquer — and we chose it for good reason:

  • Healthier for your home: Low-VOC means fewer harmful chemicals off-gassing into your living space, making it safer for your family, children, and pets.
  • Better for the environment: Water-based finishes have a significantly lower environmental impact than solvent-based alternatives.
  • Superior clarity: Our lacquer enhances the natural grain and color of the wood without the amber tint that oil-based finishes can leave behind.
  • Durability: Our finish is hard, smooth, and resistant to everyday wear, moisture, and UV fading.

Our 4-Stage Inspection Process

Choosing the right finish is only half the equation — applying it correctly is what separates good furniture from great furniture. That's why every piece that leaves our shop goes through a rigorous 4-stage inspection process to ensure a flawless finish:

  1. Pre-finish surface inspection: Before any finish is applied, the wood surface is inspected for imperfections, sanding quality, and grain consistency. Any issues are corrected before we proceed.
  2. Mid-application inspection: After the first coat is applied and dried, the surface is inspected again for uniformity, coverage, and adhesion before additional coats are added.
  3. Final coat inspection: Once the final coat is applied, the piece is carefully examined under controlled lighting for any runs, drips, uneven coverage, or surface defects.
  4. Pre-shipment quality check: Before your furniture is packaged and shipped, a final inspection ensures the finish meets our standards and the piece is ready to be enjoyed in your home.

This process isn't common in the furniture industry — but at Ideas to Home, we believe every customer deserves a piece they're proud to display in their home.

Choosing Your Finish Color

Beyond the type of finish, you'll also want to consider the color or stain. We offer a wide range of finish options for our oak and alder furniture, including Black, Cherry, Coffee, Slate, Weathered Gray, White, Hazelnut, Pecan, Antique Cherry, and more. Each stain is applied under our same quality-controlled process to ensure consistent, beautiful results.
