Why We Use Premium Plywood and Solid Wood in Our Furniture

RSS

At Ideas to Home, we're often asked: "Do you use plywood in your furniture?" The honest answer is yes — and we're proud of it. But not all plywood is created equal. Here's why our combination of premium plywood and solid wood is a smart, time-tested approach to building furniture that lasts.

The Difference Between Premium Plywood and Cheap Alternatives

When most people hear "plywood," they picture the thin, warping sheets from a big-box hardware store. Our premium ¾" plywood is a completely different product. It's made from multiple layers of real wood veneer, cross-laminated for exceptional strength and stability. Unlike particle board or MDF, premium plywood:

  • Holds screws and fasteners firmly over time
  • Resists warping and expansion from humidity changes
  • Is significantly stronger pound-for-pound than MDF
  • Can be finished to look beautiful

Where We Use Solid Wood

Solid wood — oak, alder, pine, cherry, and maple — is used for the structural and visible elements of our furniture: legs, frames, drawer fronts, tabletops, and decorative details. Solid wood gives each piece its natural beauty, unique grain character, and the ability to be sanded and refinished over the years.

Where We Use Premium Plywood

For large flat panels like cabinet sides, shelving, and drawer boxes, premium ¾" plywood is actually the superior choice. It provides:

  • Dimensional stability: Large solid wood panels can expand and contract with seasonal humidity changes, causing cracking or warping. Plywood panels stay flat.
  • Strength: The cross-laminated construction makes plywood panels incredibly strong and resistant to splitting.
  • Consistency: Every panel is uniform in thickness and density, ensuring a precise, quality fit.

Why This Combination Is the Industry Standard for Quality Furniture

The world's finest furniture makers — from craftsmen to high-end brands — use this same approach: solid wood where it matters most for beauty and structure, and premium plywood where stability and strength are the priority. It's not a shortcut; it's smart engineering.

Cheap furniture cuts corners by using particle board or MDF everywhere. We never do. Every piece from Ideas to Home is built with materials chosen for performance and longevity, not just cost.
